The Fine Distinctions of a Resume

By: Art Gib

Resumes are essential documents for those seeking employment. We are all likely familiar with them since without them we wouldn't have gotten the interview we needed to get the job we wanted. However, most of us probably aren't aware of all the different types resumes and the purpose each one serves. We'll take a look at various types of resumes, but first let's make a list of common features between the types.

First and foremost a resume helps potential employers quickly scan your accomplishments to decide whether or not they want to interview you. Generally an employer will not hire you because of your resume. Rather the resume serves the purpose of stratifying you amongst your peers. The type of resume you write will depend upon the nature of the job.

Academic or performing jobs generally require a specific list of accomplishments or publications while general business applications ask for a list of skills that would be relevant to the job for which you're applying. In other words, each resume that you write must be tailored to the specific employer in order to make it possible for you to be distinguished amongst your competitors. Along with tailoring what you present to the audience you ought to consider how you present it.

Probably the most recognizable way to present your information in a resume is to list your work experience in reverse chronological order. This allows you to quickly show how your career has developed. However writing a resume in this way puts less emphasis on the skills you've developed which usually receive a cursory review at the beginning of a chronological resume. A functional resume takes the opposite approach

Functional resumes focus on the presentation of your skills rather than providing the big picture of your career. Organizing the information this way can help those with little work experience, those changing careers, or for those applying to a company where specific skill sets are defined and desired. Combination resumes fuse the ideals of functional and chronological resumes. Online resumes are currently gaining popularity as both a cost effective and efficient mode of presentation for employers to search through.

With the advent of the internet electronic copies of resumes has become a viable way of applying to multiple employers without too much extra effort. One still needs to tailor their resumes but electronic submission expedites the process of selection since employer can search for keywords in the resumes. This also means that in applying through an online resume one should be aware of those important keywords.
